Celebrities are known to be fanatics when it comes to sticking with a good skincare routine, so it comes as no surprise that January Jones partakes in her own extensive beauty regimen just like the rest of Hollywood. However, what is surprising is that her beauty habits are already starting to rub off on her 4½-year-old son, Xander Dane. The 38-year-old mother claims that she has begun including her son Xander into her everyday beauty routine—from bubble baths to making his own hairstyle choices.

But it’s not these tidbits about bath time or hairstyles that has people interested — it’s Jones’s beauty philosophy on moisturizing. The former Mad Men star admitted to told People Magazine in an exclusive interview that she’s “really strict about getting him [Xander] moisturized,” and even claims that her biggest beauty philosophy is to “over-moisturize.” But is this really necessary for a 4-year-old to partake in as well?

Board-certified dermatologist and Sebamed spokesperson, Marnie Nussbaum, MD, says yes. “It’s essential to maintaining the pH balance of baby’s delicate skin,” she explains. “The best time to seal in moisture is right out of the bath. Simply pat the skin dry — don’t rub — and immediately apply a moisturizer within three minutes of bath time to seal in hydration and add to skin’s protective barrier before the water has a chance to evaporate.”

When looking for a lotion to use on your child, Dr. Nussbaum advises to search for products that use hyaluronic acid and glycerin. “For babies and children —from newborn through age 12+ — I recommend Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft,” says Dr. Nussbaum. “Babies are prone to exceptionally dry skin and this cream is much thicker than your average adult body lotion.”

So it sounds like it’s a good thing that Jones is sharing her skincare philosophy with her son. As it turns out, slathering on moisturizer, particularly post-bath time, is more important for children than we may have thought.
