A 'heartbroken' Hoda Kotb overcome by emotion after talking to Drew Brees about coronavirus relief

Hoda Kotb, like so many, just needed a moment amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The "Today" host became emotional Friday after interviewing quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees following his large donation to Louisiana. Thursday, the football player announced he and his wife Brittany pledged $5,000,000 to aide in relief for the state.

Kotb said she felt "heartbroken" over the suffering that those in New Orleans are experiencing. She previously worked for CBS affiliate WWL in The Big Easy.

"There's such a need," Kotb told the football player. "They need hospital equipment, they need all kinds of stuff. And all of a sudden on my Twitter feed yesterday, I looked and it said $5 million and Drew Brees, and I said, 'Oh! He came through again!' "

"When Brittany and I think about… people's just basic needs, that is to make sure that they and their family are fed and that they can continue to sustain," Brees said.

He also shared a message with the people of NOLA: "Hang in there and maintain hope. Obviously, we've been through a lot of tough times together – whether it's hurricanes, oil spills, floods. And, this is just another one of those bits of adversity that we're going to come out better on the other side. But we've got to stick together right now."

It's Kotb's hope that Brees' charitableness catches on.

"I also think a lot of things are contagious, including generosity," she said. "So, our hope is, is that because you let us know that you made this big, generous donation, I think other people look and say, 'Hey, maybe I can help out, too.' "

Kotb then attempted to deliver of tease of what was still to come on the morning show, but became unable to speak. "I'm so sorry," she managed to get out, while shuffling papers. "Sorry."

"I know where your heart is, my dear," Guthrie assured her. "How 'bout I read the tease? Want me to?"

"Yes, please," Kotb said right away.
