Collaboration of the Week: Louis Vuitton x Jeff Koons

Louis Vuitton has just unveiled its latest collaboration, with the New York-based artist Jeff Koons.

The special partnership culminates in a series of handbags and accessories inspired by Koons’s Gazing Ball art series — in which he places a blue glass gazing ball in front of artwork by some of the great painters of the past, including Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Vincent van Gogh. Here, the paintings are transposed onto a select few iconic Louis Vuitton bags such as the Speedy, the Keepall, and the Neverfull, as well as backpacks, wallets, and silky scarves.

Koons’s famous rabbit iconography is reinterpreted through the Louis Vuitton lens as colorful keychains in spring pops of color, like pastel pink, baby blue, and lavender. The rabbit motif is also present as a leather hangtag on the bags and backpacks.

Finally, in a first for the storied French house, Koons has reconfigured the iconic LV symbol to display his own initials in the same metal hardware, mirroring one another on each of the collaborative items.

Louis Vuitton has done several collaborations in the past. The luxury brand nearly broke the Internet in January when it debuted its collaboration with HYPEBEAST’s holy grail, Supreme. But Louis Vuitton’s foray into the art world with Koons is not unusual either. Koons stands in good company with past LV collaborators and esteemed artists, such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Yayoi Kusama, Cindy Sherman, and James Turrell, to name a few. Louis Vuitton’s commitment to the art world extends to its momentous creation of the Louis Vuitton Foundation — an art museum and cultural center in Paris designed by world-class architect Frank Gehry.
