James Corden Discusses ‘Carpool Karaoke’ Origin, and Anthony Kiedis Saving a Life
James Corden was the one being interviewed Sunday night when he was on Talking With Chris Hardwick. During the interview, James discussed the origin of Carpool Karaoke, and the time of the Red Hot Chili Peppers saved a baby’s life.
The idea came from a sketch James was in for the U.K.’s Red Nose Day charity telethon. James said, “The whole thing started with me and George Michael in a car singing Wham! songs. And, um, people just really responded to it.” So when James moved to the United States to host The Late Late Show, he brought the idea with him. While James knew it was a good idea, he had no idea how hard it would be to pick up hitchhiking celebrities. James said, “If you think of a recording artist — just everyone in the room and at home, think of a recording artist. Have you got one? They said no.”
Although artists eventually started saying yes — like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who did more than just sing songs — one also saved a life. While the show was shooting a dance-off between Anthony Kiedis and James Corden, a woman came running out screaming and holding a lifeless baby — and Kiedis jumped into action. James said that Kiedis immediately ran over to help the woman. James described what Kiedis did, saying, “Anthony Kiedis took this baby and he lay her on the floor, and he just started rubbing her chest. And he was listening, and he said, ‘It’s okay. She’s breathing. It’s okay.'” After he gave the baby few taps on the back — before the ambulance even got there — Kiedis had revived the baby, and the show’s stars took off to sing some more Carpool Karaoke.
