Laverne Cox Gushes Over Meeting Beyoncé at the Grammys

Laverne Cox stopped by The Late Show to tell Stephen Colbert just what it’s like when you meet royalty. And by royalty, I mean, Beyoncé. Cox said before she met her, she was at her apartment crying just thinking about it, but when the actual moment came, a calm came over her.

After Queen Bey’s magic lulled Laverne into a state of tranquility, it turned out Beyoncé is a woman of the people. She asked her handlers to help her pregnant self up and went right over to Cox to say hello.

Laverne went on to talk about how, as a presenter at the Grammys, she asked the audience to google the name Gavin Grimm. Grimm is a 17-year-old young man from Gloucester, Va., whose case is going to the Supreme Court on March 28. It will be the first time the Supreme Court hears a case on transgender rights. Grimm, who is transgendered, had to sue the Board of Education to be able to use the boy’s bathroom. Laverne summarized exactly why this case is so important, saying, “Anti-trans bathroom bills are not really about bathrooms. They’re about whether or not trans people have the right to exist in public space. Because if we can’t use public bathrooms, we can’t go to schools. We can’t work. We can’t go to health care facilities. So it’s really about us having a right to exist in public space, and I exist and I have a right to exist in public space.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
